Run a full Kali Linux desktop on Windows 11 using WSL2 and Win-KeX. Covers enabling WSL2, installing Kali, updating tools, and launching the graphical desktop in window or seamless mode.

Install Kali Linux on Windows 11 Using WSL2

Run a full Kali Linux graphical desktop environment directly on Windows 11 — no dual boot, no VM, no reboots. WSL2 + Win-KeX gives you the complete Kali toolkit with a native-feeling GUI.

Step 1: Enable WSL2

Open PowerShell as Administrator and run:

wsl --install

Restart your computer if prompted. WSL2 is enabled by default on Windows 11.

Step 2: Install Kali Linux

In PowerShell, run:

wsl --install -d kali-linux

A new terminal window will open to complete the installation.

Step 3: Create Your Unix User

When prompted, create a username and password for your Kali environment. This is your standard Linux user — separate from your Windows account.

Step 4: Update Kali

Inside the Kali terminal, update the OS and all packages:

sudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

This ensures all tools are current before installing the desktop.

Step 5: Install Win-KeX (GUI Desktop)

Install the Kali Desktop Experience:

sudo apt install -y kali-win-kex

This installs the full Xfce desktop environment optimized for WSL2.

Step 6: Launch the Desktop

Opens Kali in a dedicated window:

kex --win -s

Seamless Mode

Kali's taskbar and apps blend into the Windows desktop:

kex --sl -s

Exiting Win-KeX

Close the Win-KeX window, or from the Kali terminal run:

kex --exit

Key Commands Reference

GoalCommand
Launch GUIkex
Launch GUI (window mode)kex --win -s
Launch GUI (seamless mode)kex --sl -s
Stop GUIkex --exit
List running distroswsl -l --running
Update Kalisudo apt update && sudo apt full-upgrade -y

Notes

  • Windows 11 must be fully updated to support GUI apps via WSLg
  • Win-KeX window mode is the most stable option for daily use
  • Seamless mode requires the Win-KeX sound server — use kex --sl -s to include it
  • All Kali tools are accessible from inside the GUI terminal or directly from the WSL terminal
